Statutory health insurance

Universal statutory insurance through several public funds (VZP is the largest). Care at contracted providers is free at the point of use; direct specialist access is allowed.

How residents get care

1. Register with a fund and a GP ('praktický lékař') — Employment enrols you automatically; register with a GP and, for women, a gynaecologist and a dentist.
2. Book directly with GPs and specialists — Referral needed for some specialties and for reimbursed diagnostics.
3. Out of hours: 'lékařská pohotovostní služba' — Urgent-care points at hospitals; 155 for emergencies.

Waits are generally short for consultations; some elective surgery (joints, cataract) has hospital-level lists of a few months.
