Healthcare in Malaysia: cost & waiting times

Mixed public / private

Public clinics and hospitals run by the Ministry of Health charge citizens only nominal fees; foreigners pay much higher rates. A large private sector serves those who prefer speed or comfort, and Malaysia's private hospitals are popular with medical tourists.

Emergency number: 999 (fire 994; 112 from mobiles)

How residents get care

  1. Public health clinics (Klinik Kesihatan) — Low-cost for citizens; foreigners pay higher fees.
  2. Private GP clinics and hospitals — Book directly; no referral needed for private specialists.
  3. Medical tourism — MHTC lists accredited hospitals and helps international patients.
  4. Emergencies — Call 999 (or 112 from a mobile).

Malaysia doesn't publish national waiting times; public specialist waits can be long, private care is quick.
