Healthcare in Morocco: cost & waiting times

Statutory health insurance

Compulsory health insurance (AMO) has been extended to almost the whole population since 2022, managed by the CNSS for workers and the self-employed and with state-funded cover for people on low incomes. Public hospitals are busy; most people who can afford it use private clinics (cliniques), especially in Casablanca, Rabat and Marrakech.

Emergency number: Ambulance/Fire 150 · Police 190 (19 in cities)

How residents get care

  1. Private doctors and clinics — Book directly; no referral is needed for private specialists.
  2. Public health centres and hospitals — Low-cost but busy; standards vary.
  3. Claim from AMO — Insured people pay and claim reimbursement from the CNSS (or the clinic bills it directly).
  4. Emergencies — Call 150 for an ambulance; private ambulance services operate in larger cities.

Official waiting-time source

Morocco doesn't publish waiting times; public hospital waits can be long, private care is quick.
