Healthcare in South Africa: cost & waiting times

Mixed public / private

Public clinics and hospitals serve most of the population at low or no cost, but are under heavy pressure. About one in six people belong to a private medical scheme, giving access to a large, high-quality private hospital sector (Netcare, Mediclinic, Life Healthcare). National Health Insurance (NHI) legislation was passed in 2024 but is not yet in operation.

Emergency number: Ambulance/Fire 10177 Β· Police 10111 Β· 112 from mobiles

How residents get care

  1. Private GP β€” Book directly; medical schemes pay according to your plan.
  2. Private specialist β€” Many schemes require a GP referral to pay specialist costs in full.
  3. Public clinics and hospitals β€” Go to a local clinic first; it refers you to hospitals. Fees depend on income.
  4. Emergencies β€” Call 10177 (public ambulance) or a private ambulance (ER24, Netcare 911) β€” private services are usually faster.

Official waiting-time source

South Africa doesn't publish national waiting lists; public surgical backlogs are long, private care is quick.
