Tax-funded care run by 21 regions. You pay small standard fees per visit up to an annual 'high-cost ceiling' ('högkostnadsskydd', ~SEK 1,400) after which care is free for 12 months.

How residents get care

  1. Choose a health centre ('vårdcentral') — List yourself with one via 1177.se or the region's app; it's your first contact for most problems.
  2. Call or use 1177 for advice — 1177 is the national health information and triage service, online and by phone.
  3. Referral or self-referral to specialists — Rules vary by region; the national care guarantee sets maximum waits.

The care guarantee: contact with a health centre same day, GP within 3 days, specialist within 90 days, treatment within 90 days of the decision.

EHIC covers necessary care; you pay the same standard patient fee a resident pays.

Emergencies Call 112; emergency departments ('akutmottagning') charge the standard fee.
